A government's role is only
to provide defense capability and urban infrastructure (road, water
supplies...). All other services (education, health, social security) should be
provided by private groups or individuals in the community. To what extent do you
agree or disagree?
Write at least 250 words.
The notion of ideal modern society always involves a certain
level of independency. Government’s responsibility only revolves around defense
and urban infrastructure. They steer clear from anything dealing with individual
needs because people are expected to deal with it themselves. This is a very
determining matter for society and therefore needs a thoughtful consideration.
Government’s involvement in public service has been
considered ineffective for some time. Aside from defying the idea of sought-after
society that is comprised by independent, self-supporting people, subsidy also
means higher taxes. Most people are not exactly keen with the idea that some
strangers are using their hard earned money.
However, the absence of subsidy can also create a major gap
in society. Wealthy people will have a guaranteed and secure life, while the
underprivileged will continue to strive for healthcare and education. Therefore
to ensure decent life for all citizen, it is more beneficial if the government
do provide for public services but only to certain extent, namely for people who
actually in need.
Furthermore, this can provide a chance for wealthier people
to contribute to society. After all, the society they live in is basically the
indirect source of their wealth.
Overall, despite the negativity often associated with
government’s interference in public services, I believe that this does not
apply to every part of society.
